Summer is only a few weeks away, and the end of school opens up a social void for many students. Spending time with friends is no longer assured daily, and they must now take it upon themselves to stay social. A great way to do this is by seeing movies with friends. As summer approaches, keep in mind these upcoming releases, and that the Rave Cinema in Ypsilanti offers movie tickets for $5.75 all day on Wednesdays.
The childhood classic novel “Captain Underpants” will be adapted into a movie premiering on June 2. Harold and George, two elementary school kids, hypnotize their rude principal into believing he is a fun superhero who protects the town from evil. This novel, and now movie, will inspire generations to come with its comedy and wholehearted situations.
The third installment of the animated favorite “Cars” is coming to the big screen on June 16. This movie’s second installment only received 39% on Rotten Tomatoes, but that didn’t deter Pixar from creating another. In “Cars 3,” Lightning McQueen must fight to save his spot from up and coming cars in the brilliant new take that will have audiences saying “okay, that was about what I’d expect.”
Universal Pictures will bless moviegoers with “Despicable Me 3,” a movie that many are desperately awaiting. The writers are fantastic at pulling new plots out of thin air that don’t add much to the story line. In this story, Gru’s Spy Institute employs him to fight a new villain threatening the world. Then, (plot twist) Gru’s long lost twin, Dru, shows up, even though there was never any mention of him in the other movies. Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig return in this continuation of a masterpiece that will premiere June 30.
July 21 will bring “Girl’s Trip,” a comedy about four women on vacation in New Orleans for an annual festival. The middle aged friends have an experience that makes them remember their younger days and bring them closer together with raunchy, sexy situations. Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith appear in this adult adventure that will make audiences feel young again.
“Really?” and “Come on” are just some of the responses students have expressed when they learned about the new “Emoji Movie” coming out in late July. This movie introduces a new world called “Textopolis” where all the emojis roam, waiting to be selected by text. A unique, emotionless emoji goes on a quest to become normal with a “high 5” and a “jailbreak” emoji. This movie’s plot is clever and innovative and is sure to top some obscure charts out there. Anna Faris and Sofia Vergara are just two of the voices appearing in this fantastic idea of a movie coming July 28.
The race riots that ravaged Detroit in the height of the Civil Rights Movement inspired production of “Detroit,” coming Aug. 4. John Boyega, Jacob Latimore, and Leon Thomas appear in this historical story that took place 50 years ago. This movie will be a great way to reiterate the events of the riots in the minds of the public.
Steven King fans will look forward to the “It” reboot this summer. “It” originally aired in 1990, based on a King novel about a group of adults forced to fight an evil shape-shifting monster who ravaged their Maine town when they were young. The demonic shapeshifter favors a clown look that, with today’s special effects and movie magic, is sure to scare the ever-living fudge out of viewers. This movie is set to premiere Sept. 8, just as summer vacation ends.
